Tibetan Saddle Rug Set | Snow Lion Coral Turquoise
SKU: 191-03-04
This rare and complete Tibetan horse saddle set comprises a main saddle cover, placed beneath the saddle on the horse's back, and its matching companion panel, placed on the saddle for the rider's comfort — together forming a harmonious and visually rich ensemble designed for both function and display, presenting a compelling visual and cultural narrative where protection, strength, and auspicious energy converge through the powerful image of the Snow Lion.
The composition is centred around the stylised Snow Lion — depicted with a dynamic, almost animated posture — its body rendered in pale, luminous tones that stand in striking contrast to the vibrant ground. The creature appears both grounded and ethereal, its expressive face, curling mane, and exaggerated limbs conveying vitality, alertness, and sacred presence.
In Tibetan culture, the Snow Lion is one of the Four Dignities and serves as a potent emblem of fearlessness and joy, spiritual authority and vigilance, and the unshakeable strength of the Buddhist teachings (Dharma).
Unlike naturalistic depictions, the Tibetan Snow Lion is a mythical being — often shown with a turquoise mane and a white or pale body — symbolising purity rising above the material world. Its presence on a horse saddle textile is deeply meaningful: it acts as a protector of both rider and animal, imbuing journeys with auspicious energy while warding off misfortune.
The framing of the lion within a structured geometric cartouche, surrounded by rhythmic motifs — stepped forms, wave-like elements, and symbolic fillers — suggests a dialogue between cosmic order and earthly movement. The larger saddle panel (A), placed on the horse's back underneath the saddle, extends this narrative longitudinally, while the smaller square piece (B), placed on top of the saddle, provides comfort to the rider and acts as a complementary protective or decorative element.
Woven in resilient, lanolin-rich Himalayan wool, the set possesses a supple handle and a softly lustrous surface — qualities that would have enhanced both durability and visual depth in use.
