An antique East Turkestan rug from the late 19th century (circa 1870–1900), presenting a dense all-over lattice of abstracted pomegranate motifs in golden saffron and warm apricot against a deep indigo-midnight blue ground. The high-contrast ikat-like composition balances strict geometric precision with organic vitality. Very good condition retaining excellent design clarity. Measures 184 x 380 cm.

A striking and highly graphic East Turkestan weaving, with a powerful contrast-driven composition and a beautifully disciplined repeat. This antique East Turkestan rug is defined by a dense, all-over lattice composition, executed with remarkable clarity and precision. Set against a deep indigo ground, the field is animated by a repeating network of stylised vegetal and seed-like motifs, which, upon closer inspection, strongly evoke abstracted pomegranate forms.

Each unit appears constructed around a central rounded element — suggestive of the fruit — connected by angular, branching structures that resemble stems, leaves, and the internal segmentation of the pomegranate itself. These motifs are arranged in a tightly interlocking grid, creating a rhythmic, almost pulsating surface that balances strict geometry with organic vitality.

The use of strong contrast — golden saffron and warm apricot tones against a dark indigo field — heightens the visual impact, giving the design a luminous, almost textile-like quality reminiscent of ikat or resist-dyed traditions of Central Asia. The precision of the repeat suggests a workshop tradition with a well-established design vocabulary.

Framing the field, a series of borders provide both structure and decorative counterpoint. The main border, composed of small geometric units, reinforces the lattice logic of the field, while the outer guards introduce a softer, more fluid rhythm. Together, they create a cohesive architectural frame that contains and enhances the richly patterned interior.

Beyond its decorative strength, the presence of the pomegranate motif imbues the piece with symbolic meaning — representing fertility, abundance, and continuity, themes deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of the Silk Road.
