Hand-Knotted Tibetan Khaden Rug | Indigo Field Floral Medallion
30-04-03
This khaden presents a striking and unusually disciplined composition, where repetition becomes rhythm. Set against a deep, almost inky ground, a field of evenly spaced floral roundels unfolds with quiet precision. Each motif—resembling a stylised blossom or rosette—appears to float, its soft geometry gently punctuating the dark expanse.
The design recalls textile precedents, likely inspired by Chinese brocade silks of the Qing period, where such repeating medallions conveyed harmony, order, and continuity. Here, however, the Tibetan weaver interprets the theme with a more restrained, almost meditative sensibility. The spacing between motifs is generous, allowing the field to breathe—an aesthetic choice that enhances the visual calm and lends the rug an understated elegance.
There is a quiet sophistication in this balance between structure and softness: the regularity of the pattern contrasted by the subtle irregularities of hand-knotting, which give life and warmth to the composition. The result is a piece that feels both decorative and contemplative, equally suited to a refined interior or a collector’s setting.
