Hand-Knotted Tibetan Khaden Rug | Indigo Ground Floral Vine
95-05-04
This antique Tibetan khaden is distinguished by its dynamic, all-over composition, where scrolling vine forms move gracefully across a deep, saturated field. The design abandons strict symmetry in favor of a more fluid and continuous pattern, evoking the natural growth of plants and the gentle movement of water.
Interwoven along these sinuous stems are stylized floral rosettes and lotus blossoms, symbols of purity, renewal, and spiritual awakening within Tibetan and broader Buddhist iconography. The flowers appear to float and unfold across the surface, creating a sense of effortless vitality and decorative richness.
The absence of a rigid central axis gives the piece a more spontaneous and intimate character, closer to textile patterns found in robes or furnishings influenced by Chinese decorative arts. This lends the rug a refined yet relaxed elegance, where ornament and movement are in perfect harmony.
Woven in silky, lanolin-rich Himalayan wool, the surface would have had a soft sheen, enhancing the contrast between the deep ground and the luminous motifs.
