This antique Tibetan khaden presents a graceful and well-ordered composition built upon a lattice of twelve linked octagonal medallions, each enclosing a stylized floral bloom.
The design achieves a delicate balance between structure and vitality: the geometric framework provides rhythm and continuity, while the flowers within each compartment introduce variation, softness, and life. These blooms—evoking lotus or chrysanthemum forms—carry enduring associations with purity, renewal, and longevity, deeply rooted in Tibetan and wider Asian artistic traditions.
The interconnecting lines that link the medallions suggest a continuous garden lattice, a visual metaphor for interconnectedness and harmonious growth. At the same time, the open, light-toned field allows each motif to breathe, giving the composition an airy, luminous quality.
There is a quiet spontaneity in the drawing—subtle irregularities that reveal the hand of the weaver—imbuing the piece with warmth and authenticity. Woven in silky, lanolin-rich Himalayan wool, the surface would have carried a gentle sheen, enhancing both the clarity of the design and its refined decorative presence.
