Hand-Knotted Tibetan Khaden Rug | Jewel Knot Medallions
92-05-04
A superb example of early 20th-century Tibetan weaving, this khaden (sleeping rug) presents three bold medallions, likely lotus flowers, radiating across a deep midnight blue field. The lotus, a timeless emblem of purity and spiritual awakening, anchors the composition.
The three medallions echo the Buddhist Three Jewels — Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha — offering profound spiritual protection. Floating auspicious clouds drift across the field, suggesting celestial blessings and the transitory nature of existence. The central field is framed by a classic Greek key (meander) inner border, a symbol of continuity and protection.
Beyond this, an intricate arrangement of clouds, mountains, and waves evokes the Tibetan concept of the universe, emphasizing resilience, the cycles of life, and the interconnectedness of all existence. Woven with hand-spun wool, the rug exhibits the rich chromatic depth and luminous quality characteristic of highland Tibetan craftsmanship.
Its harmonious composition would have originally provided a sacred resting place, transforming the simple act of sleep into a quiet meditation on the spiritual journey. This khaden is a rare and soulful artifact, equally compelling as a work of textile art and as a testament to the enduring spirit of Tibetan culture.
