Hand-Knotted Tibetan Khaden Rug | Navy Cloud Dragons
14-04-02
In the heart of this late 1900s or early 20th-century Tibetan khaden rug, two magnificent dragons rise, their powerful limbs outstretched as they dance through a celestial sea of swirling clouds. The vibrant, multicoloured clouds weave a dreamlike tapestry that bridges two worlds—Tibetan and Chinese artistic traditions—melding them in a harmonious embrace.
The dragons themselves, with their expressive faces and flowing manes, pulse with life, their scales shimmering with every movement. Each dragon’s limbs stretch outward, ending in five claws, an emblem of imperial authority and spiritual strength, revered symbols that transcend time and culture.
Around these celestial beings, the clouds take on a character of their own, their shapes drawing inspiration from ancient Ming-Qing textile designs, twisting and curling in intricate patterns that evoke the sacred winds of the universe. The same clouds gently frame each of the four corners, their presence rounding the swirling energy of the dragons as they soar.
In this khaden, the absence of the flaming pearl—a common motif in such compositions—speaks volumes, offering a unique vision where the pursuit of enlightenment is not defined by a singular object, but by the boundless movement of these mythical creatures in pursuit of something beyond, something unspoken.
The rug is gently protected by a border of coral-red textile, safeguarding its structure and ensuring the integrity of this rare work. Chinese artistry.
