Hand-Knotted Tibetan Khaden Rug | Red & Green Micro-Checkerboard Pattern
41-04-05
This early 20th-century Tibetan Khaden embodies the quiet strength and graphic clarity characteristic of traditional Himalayan weaving. Hand-knotted using hand-spun Himalayan wool, the pile retains a soft, supple handle and a gentle sheen, a testament to the natural lanolin preserved within the fibres.
The composition unfolds over a deep indigo ground—almost nocturnal in its intensity—creating a contemplative field upon which the design emerges with luminous precision. Across this surface, a carefully ordered grid of roundels encloses stylised longevity symbols (Shou), repeated in a disciplined rhythm that speaks to balance, harmony, and the enduring aspiration for long life.
Each motif is rendered with confident simplicity, alternating in tone and colour to create a subtle yet dynamic visual cadence. The repetition is not merely decorative; it is symbolic, multiplying auspicious meaning across the entire field and reinforcing the spiritual and protective nature of the textile.
Small secondary motifs—delicate and almost floating—punctuate the composition, adding lightness and movement. These may be interpreted as abstract floral or butterfly forms, gently softening the geometry and introducing an element of poetic transience.
The border, restrained yet effective, frames the field with a warm rust-red band, providing a chromatic counterpoint to the cool depth of the central ground and anchoring the overall design.
This Khaden stands out for its bold yet meditative presence. The interplay between the dark field and the softly luminous motifs creates a refined visual tension, while the repetition of the longevity symbol lends the piece both decorative coherence and symbolic depth. The slightly irregular drawing—evidence of the artisan’s hand—enhances its authenticity, making it not only a functional textile but also a compelling expression of Tibetan cultural and spiritual aesthetics.
