A truly exceptional and scholarly piece, this remarkable Tibetan rug presents an unusually sophisticated and iconographically rich composition, centred around a sequence of coin-like medallions—each enclosing a pairing of mythological and symbolic creatures. Such an arrangement is exceedingly rare, and in its conceptual clarity and decorative refinement, it stands apart as a highly distinctive example within the corpus of Tibetan weaving.

This coin-shaped medallions enclose both 2 mythical creatures: a phoenix and a snow lion within a single, unified frame. The phoenix, with its squared wings and composed bearing, reflects the influence of Ming-period Chinese textile traditions, conveying refinement and order. In contrast, the snow lion—depicted frontally with a lively, almost whimsical expression—embodies the vitality and spiritual character of Tibetan visual culture. Their coexistence within each roundel creates a compelling dialogue, uniting courtly elegance with indigenous symbolism.

The field is further enlivened by lotus blossoms, birds, and butterflies, introducing movement and reinforcing themes of harmony and transformation.
