This hand-knotted Tibetan runner, dating from the late 1800s to early 1900s, is crafted from hand-spun wool sourced from the Himalayan plateau.
The field features a central multicoloured floral medallion, smaller in scale than the three larger medallions flanking it on either side. On each side, two medallions appear: the ones closest to the centre share the same motif, while the outermost medallions display subtle variations in both design and colour scheme.
Scattered across the field—yet arranged with a subtle order—are cloud or half-cloud motifs, creating a celestial backdrop for the medallions. In each corner, stylised depictions of ocean waves and mountains evoke the traditional Tibetan 'universe' design, a symbolic representation often found in these textiles.

The field is enclosed by two inner frames: a narrow plain band followed by a classic pearl border; a motif typically seen in this genre of runners. The outer, wider border is adorned with an elegantly drawn ‘T’ meander—also known as the thunder meander or thunder line. This is a traditional motif symbolizing the power of thunder and lightning. It represents dynamic energy, the life force, and in Buddhist thought, the unpredictability of existence and the path to enlightenment.

There is a sense of quiet movement in this runner, a meditative rhythm that suggests it may have been a commissioned piece by Buddhist devotees for donation to a monastery—woven in a respected centre known for its craftsmanship.
