Sold as a pair.
This antique pair of Tibetan rugs presents a mesmerising checkerboard composition, where a field of finely balanced alternating squares unfolds in a continuous, almost hypnotic rhythm. At first glance, the design appears deceptively simple, yet on closer inspection it reveals extraordinary depth, brought to life by magnificent abrash and the organic variability of hand-spun wool.
The checkerboard — an ancient and universal motif — here becomes a study in balance, duality, and quiet dynamism. The two-tone colour interplay is not static but alive: subtle shifts in dye saturation create waves of movement across the surface, transforming the grid into a living field of the palette.
There is no central medallion, no hierarchy — only repetition elevated into visual poetry. The slight irregularities in alignment and tone speak of the human hand, imbuing the piece with warmth and authenticity. Framed by a simple hand-knotted red border, the composition is both contained and expansive, allowing the material itself to take precedence.
Woven in silky, lanolin-rich Himalayan wool, the textile would have originally possessed a soft sheen, further enhancing the vibrancy and depth of its chromatic interplay.
Age: Early to mid-20th century (circa 1920–1940)
Condition: Structurally sound with no repairs and a beautifully developed patina from discreet use over the years.
Colours (2): Hues of cinnabar red — deep rust / tones of olive green — yellow-green
Dimensions: 86 cm x 165 cm (33.8 in x 64.9 in) each

Colours and detail may vary depending on your screen, lighting, and device — natural dyes in particular (madder, indigo, walnut) photograph differently than they appear in person. Each piece is one of a kind; we recommend viewing in person or requesting additional photos and video before committing.
