Hand-Knotted Tibetan Khaden Rug | Crimson Field with Floral Vine
76-05-02
This vibrant Tibetan rug is a celebration of life, abundance, and refined decorative harmony. Set against a luminous cinnabar red field—a colour deeply associated in Tibetan culture with joy, protection, and auspicious energy—the composition unfolds with a sequence of large, stylised floral medallions, most likely representing peonies.
The peony, though of Chinese origin, became widely embraced in Tibetan textile art as a symbol of wealth, honour, and flourishing prosperity. Here, the blossoms appear in gentle succession along the vertical axis, creating a sense of rhythmic growth—almost as if the flowers are unfolding over time. Their rounded, full forms convey abundance and softness, offering a pleasing contrast to the more angular and structured decorative elements that frame them.
The surrounding motifs—cloud forms, stylised foliage, and geometric borders—enhance the symbolic language of the rug. The clouds may allude to spiritual elevation and the ephemeral nature of existence, while the scrolling vines suggest continuity and the eternal cycle of life. Altogether, the design carries both a decorative charm and a deeper, quietly auspicious meaning.
This type of rug would have been intended not only as a functional object but also as a source of visual and symbolic enrichment within a domestic or semi-formal setting.
