This striking Tibetan rug, dating from the early to mid-20th century, features a vibrant deep red to maroon field adorned with a repeating floral motif known as the “Potala Flower” — a classic and iconic design in Tibetan weaving. Bold, stylized, and rich in symbolism, this composition stands as a compelling expression of traditional Tibetan textile artistry.

The central field displays eight full Potala flower motifs in full bloom, while partial blossoms elegantly frame the short ends of the rug. This iconic motif, often interpreted as a lotus blossom emerging from a vase or as a floral spray, is deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhist iconography. It symbolizes purity, continuity, and the sacred act of offering.

The motifs appear almost to float across the red ground, framed by fine tendrils and stylized foliage that lend the composition both movement and delicacy. Each flower features a central swirling element, evoking the eternal knot — a revered symbol representing the interconnection of all things and the cyclical nature of existence.

Arranged in a stacked pattern, the flowers reflect the structured presentation of offerings or floral arrangements seen in Tibetan temple rituals. This orderly layout not only enhances the visual rhythm but also echoes the spiritual harmony and discipline integral to Tibetan monastic life.
