Hand-Knotted Tibetan Khaden Rug | Indigo Cloud Medallion

A refined and quietly powerful composition, this antique Tibetan rug is distinguished by a striking central medallion, set within a deeply saturated indigo field that lends the composition both depth and gravitas. The medallion—remarkable for its vivid green ground—appears almost luminous against the darker surround, its form carefully articulated with accents of red and pale blue that heighten its visual presence.

Surrounding this focal element, a field of stylised cloud motifs unfolds in a rhythmic and somewhat unconventional arrangement. These cloud forms, rendered with a degree of abstraction, introduce a sense of movement and atmospheric lightness, suggesting the celestial realm so often evoked in Tibetan and Sino-Buddhist decorative traditions. Their presence is particularly noteworthy, as such motifs are less commonly encountered in this format, lending the piece a distinctive character.

Encasing the composition, the meandering ‘T’ border is drawn with a subtle three-dimensionality, its articulated geometry creating a sense of depth and structure. This border not only frames the field but also anchors the more fluid interior, establishing a refined balance between order and spontaneity.

The relatively coarse knotting contributes to the tactile honesty of the piece, while simultaneously enhancing the boldness of its design.
