Hand-Knotted Tibetan Khaden Rug | Midnight Floral Vine Lattice on Indigo Ground
56-04-06
This antique Tibetan Khaden presents a beautifully balanced all-over floral composition, reflecting a refined synthesis of Tibetan weaving tradition and Sino-Tibetan decorative influence.
Hand-knotted in hand-spun Himalayan wool, the rug offers a supple texture and a soft, naturally luminous surface, enhanced by the lanolin-rich fibres. The deep indigo ground—rich and almost velvety—creates a dramatic backdrop against which the design unfolds with clarity and elegance.
The field is animated by a continuous network of scrolling vines, forming a trellis-like structure that extends seamlessly across the surface. From this fluid framework emerge stylised floral medallions—resembling peonies or lotus blossoms—interspersed with smaller leaf forms. The drawing is both rhythmic and organic, with each element connected, suggesting growth, continuity, and the cyclical nature of life.
The absence of a dominant central medallion allows the pattern to flow freely, creating an immersive visual field that feels both decorative and meditative. This type of design, while ornamental, also carries symbolic resonance: floral motifs in Tibetan and Chinese traditions often evoke prosperity, renewal, and harmony with nature.
The composition is confident yet unforced, with slight variations in drawing that attest to its hand-crafted origin, lending the piece warmth and authenticity.
What distinguishes this Khaden is the fluidity of its vine pattern and the harmonious interplay of colour across a dark, saturated ground. The design achieves a delicate balance between structure and spontaneity, creating a surface that is both lively and composed.
The palette—rich yet softened by time—enhances the textile’s decorative appeal, while the quality of the wool and the clarity of the motifs suggest a well-executed workshop or accomplished village weaving.
A piece of quiet sophistication, this Khaden brings together artistry, symbolism, and craftsmanship in a refined and enduring form.
