Hand-Knotted Tibetan Runner | Medallion Axis with Rosette Field
121-02-01
This antique Tibetan runner presents a beautifully ordered composition structured around a sequence of repeating medallions aligned along the central axis. Each medallion, delicately articulated, encloses stylized floral elements arranged in balanced symmetry, creating a sense of continuity and visual cadence along the length of the piece.
The field, rendered in a warm and luminous tone, is enlivened by rows of small rosettes or seed-like motifs that punctuate the space between the medallions, adding texture and rhythm without disturbing the overall harmony. The composition is framed by multiple borders, including a lighter inner guard and a more elaborate outer band featuring scrolling vegetal elements, reinforcing the sense of containment and refinement.
The interplay between geometric structure and floral ornament reflects a synthesis of Tibetan symbolic language and Chinese decorative influence, resulting in a design that is both disciplined and gently expressive. The elongated format enhances its architectural presence, making it particularly suited for corridors or ceremonial spaces.
Woven in silky, lanolin-rich Himalayan wool, the surface would have displayed a soft sheen, enhancing the clarity and depth of the design.
