This early 1900s Thekeb is a beautifully preserved Tibetan horse blanket, handwoven from wool for use in both ceremonial pageantry and long-distance travel. Its refined structure and richly patterned surface reflect the deep cultural significance of horses in Tibetan life and the artistry dedicated to their adornment.

The upper register, woven in a striking crimson red, features a rhythmic sequence of diamond medallions, each containing stylized floral or geometric motifs. These are punctuated by small gold-toned highlights, lending a subtle sense of luxury. A horizontal Greek key meander runs below, a classic symbol of eternity and the unbroken cycle of life.

The main field is densely decorated with a complex, interlocking lattice of diamond-shaped floral motifs, alternating in tones of indigo, coral, blush, ivory, and rose. The overall effect is one of harmony and movement, a reflection of both aesthetic order and spiritual balance.

The delicate colour palette—at once soft and vibrant—evokes the tones of the Tibetan landscape and sky. This rare textile stands as a masterful example of Himalayan refined craftsmanship, marrying function, symbolism, and beauty in a singular expression of Tibetan equestrian tradition.
