Moroccan Rug | Berber Calligraphic Linear Field
145-02-03
An antique Moroccan tribal rug from the first half of the 20th century (circa 1940–1950), presenting a calligraphic composition of horizontal linear motifs on a soft undyed wool ground. The irregular cadence of red, indigo, and muted blue lines — evoking the shifting horizons of the Atlas Mountains — reflects a deeply personal Berber weaving tradition where motifs carry talismanic and autobiographical meaning. Structurally stable with no repairs. Measures 125 x 220 cm.
This antique Moroccan rug unfolds like a visual improvisation — an intimate record of gesture, rhythm, and instinct. Set against a soft, undyed wool ground, the composition is animated by a network of linear motifs that traverse the field horizontally, occasionally intersected by small geometric accents and symbolic marks.
These lines — rendered in alternating tones of red, indigo, and muted blue — appear almost calligraphic, as though drawn rather than woven. Their irregular cadence gives the piece a striking sense of movement, echoing the landscape of the Atlas Mountains: shifting horizons, pathways, and the quiet pulse of daily life.
Unlike more rigidly structured carpet traditions, this weaving embraces asymmetry and spontaneity. The weaver's hand is ever-present — visible in the subtle variations of spacing, the gentle wavering of lines, and the nuanced transitions of colour. Toward one end, the composition becomes denser, almost gathering momentum, before dissolving again into the calm openness of the ground.
Such rugs are often deeply personal creations, where motifs may carry protective, talismanic, or autobiographical meanings — encoded in a visual language that is both individual and ancestral.

Dimensions: 125 cm x 220 cm (49.2 in x 86.6 in)
Colours and detail may vary depending on your screen, lighting, and device — natural dyes in particular (madder, indigo, walnut) photograph differently than they appear in person. Each piece is one of a kind; we recommend viewing in person or requesting additional photos and video before committing.
