Tibetan Horse Mask/Yak Takyab | Mount Meru Flame Lotus
303
A rare Tibetan takyab horse mask from the second half of the 20th century, hand-knotted in wool and shaped as a stylised floral silhouette emerging from a mountain — a possible reference to Mount Meru. Measuring 24 x 26 cm, this ceremonial forehead ornament retains its original ties and is presented hand-stitched to a backing cloth and framed in white. The crimson, coral, and gold palette reflects the full vibrancy of Tibetan equestrian textile tradition.
A rare and vibrant takyab, a ceremonial forehead ornament traditionally used to adorn horses and other pack animals such as yaks and mules. This striking example is hand-knotted in wool, shaped in a stylised floral silhouette emerging from a mountain — a possible reference to Mount Meru.
Woven on a small loom using classic Tibetan knotting techniques, the takyab served both symbolic and decorative purposes — believed to protect the animal, attract blessings, and enhance its status during festivals, processions, and special occasions.
The floral motif may represent spiritual offerings or auspicious growth, while the dynamic shape echoes lotus or flame forms — symbols of purity and spiritual vitality.
A unique and culturally significant piece of Tibetan equestrian textile art — small in scale, yet rich in spirit and visual impact.
