A hand-knotted Tibetan takyab horse forehead ornament from the first quarter of the 20th century, shaped with lobes at the top and tapering to a rounded base. Woven in vibrant red, indigo, ivory, and green with abstract auspicious motifs on a bold red ground. Measuring 25 x 26 cm, it is hand-stitched to a yellow cotton edging, backed with beige cotton, and elegantly framed in white — a rare and vivid example of Tibetan ceremonial equestrian textile art.

This distinctive hand-knotted Tibetan textile, shaped with lobes at the top and tapering to a rounded base, is a horse forehead ornament known as a takyab. Traditionally used in nomadic Tibetan culture, it was tied to the foreheads of horses during festivals, religious processions, and special occasions.
Woven in vibrant shades of red, black, yellow, and pale blue, the piece features abstract and symbolic motifs that may reference auspicious symbols, protective deities, or tribal emblems. The bold red ground — a colour associated with protection and vitality in Tibetan tradition — enhanced the ceremonial appearance of the animal while invoking spiritual safeguarding.
The hand-knotted technique suggests it was made with care, likely on a small portable loom. The zoomorphic form and bright design not only reflected the status of the owner but also served to ward off malevolent spirits and bring good fortune to the journey or event.
