Tibetan Monastery Runner | Floral Roundel Field
167-03-02
This particularly graceful and visually balanced antique Tibetan runner unfolds with a refined sense of harmony, its composition structured around a sequence of rounded medallions that gently punctuate the elongated field. Each motif, floral in spirit and softly articulated, appears to float upon a luminous cinnabar ground, creating a rhythm that is measured yet fluid. The medallions—reminiscent of stylised blossoms or celestial roundels—introduce a sense of continuity and quiet symbolism, often associated with cycles of renewal and balance. Their spacing allows the field to breathe, lending the composition an openness that contrasts beautifully with more densely ornamented examples.
Framing the central field, the borders in cool blue-grey tones provide a calming counterpoint to the warmth of the ground. Within these borders, subtle decorative elements—floral or scrolling in nature—add a layer of refinement without disturbing the overall clarity of the design.
The presence of wool fringes along the edges softens the linearity of the runner, introducing a tactile and almost organic dimension. Woven in resilient, lanolin-rich Himalayan wool, the textile would have possessed a supple handle and a gentle sheen, its colours mellowing into a harmonious patina over time.
