This antique Tibetan runner unfolds as a vibrant celebration of floral symbolism, its composition anchored in a series of large, fully blossomed medallions that rise along the central axis like offerings placed in sequence. Each bloom—likely inspired by the peony (botan), the “king of flowers”—is rendered with generous, rounded forms and fluid outlines, conveying abundance, prosperity, and noble beauty.

Set against a luminous cinnabar-red field, the floral motifs appear almost to float, their soft celadon greens, pale blues, and warm pink accents creating a gentle yet confident chromatic dialogue. The drawing is both bold and graceful, with curling stems and stylised leaves that echo the ornamental vocabulary of Qing dynasty textiles, translated here into the tactile language of Tibetan pile weaving.

The composition is framed by an intricate system of borders: the inner guard bands enlivened with floral elements, while the outer borders feature a rhythmic Greek key (meander) motif—often associated with continuity and protection. These framing devices not only contain the vibrant field but also reinforce its ceremonial presence.

Woven in resilient, lanolin-rich Himalayan wool, the rug possesses a soft, supple handle and a subtle sheen, allowing the colours to resonate with depth and warmth. The overall effect is one of balance—between structure and movement, symbolism and decoration, vitality and refinement.
